British Guild of Beer Writers’ Website

We love beer at Brewhouse, so we were honoured to be asked to develop a new website for the British Guild of Beer Writers.

The Guild, a venerable institution of the most talented of UK beer writers and professionals, desperately needed an online presence that matched the vibrancy, diversity and productivity of its membership. We aimed to make the site more:

  • User friendly
  • Useful
  • Beneficial to members (both individual and corporate)
  • Findable on Google
  • Visually appealing

The first step was to design a site that was much more visually appealing than the old site, with more images and easily navigable sections. We incorporated a sidebar with links to the latest news, featured member profiles, and links to the most commonly used tags.

The site’s homepage features a Twitter widget, which pulls in all mentions of guild members on Twitter, providing a visual and immediate window into members’ current activities.

Using WordPress, we ensured that different sidebars could be created for different pages, so the members’ page features a sidebar index of each member’s name, with an individual page for each member. This gives members the opportunity to upload profile photos, biographical information and generally have more space to showcase their ability and interests.

Each member page also features a number of tags that describe their areas of expertise. This creates a fully indexable element of the site which allows visitors to search by these tags (i.e. cellarmanship, speaking, tasting, history, Europe etc.). We believe this will greatly improve the opportunity for visitors to browse members according to their areas of interest and expertise.

The browsing experience is key, and can also link through to relevant stories from the news and newsletter sections where Guild Members are mentioned. As much as possible, everything has been linked.

As with the Guild Members, all Corporate Members have been allocated their own page. This gives them the opportunity to add a photo, logo and descriptions of their key product lines, if they so wish.

The project was a labour of love for us – as members of the Guild, and as lovers of good beer.
